A major initiative that Apollo Tyres Ltd has been pursuing in the past few years is of reducing the vulnerability of long distance truckers, and all those who work in the trucking community, through extensive HIV-AIDS prevention and awareness programmes. Targeted interventions in the form of Apollo Tyres Health Care Centres, which are physical health clinics, have been established across large transshipment hubs in the country.
The Centres are staffed with qualified doctors, paramedics, counsellors and outreach workers, who work with the immediate community in the transshipment hubs or transport nagars across India. The programme focuses on identification and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs and STIs) , behaviour change communication (BCC) and condom promotion.
A large network of peer educators and outreach workers, taken from the community are trained to enable a robust referral system across the transshipment hub. Potential STD and STI individuals are then referred to the clinic by peer educators and outreach workers. At these clinics, which are well-equipped for such treatment, patients undergo examination, tests and counselling followed by suitable treatment – all at a nominal or no cost basis.
Behaviour Change Communication aims at increasing awareness regarding the spread and prevention aspects of HIV-AIDS. The focus is on changing attitudes and behaviour through effective communication, carried out by peer educators on an individual or group level, backed by easy to understand infotainment activities.
Condom promotion takes place through free distribution as well as social marketing of condoms, which are available at various outlets and strategic points within the transport nagars. Outreach workers and peer educators also emphasise on the correct usage and disposal of condoms.
Once a customer’s behaviour pattern has been mapped and vulnerabilities identified, patients are referred for voluntary testing at the nearest government hospital. With pre- and post-test counselling available at Apollo Tyres Health Care Centres, depending on need, patients are presented with available options of local care and support groups.
